When I grow up I want to work in recruitment.
Said no kid ever.
The only lie I ever told in an interview was to James Calder in 2005, when he met me for a trainee job. “I applied because I’ve always wanted to work in recruitment” was my line 5 mins in.
I’d sent out 100+ job applications after uni. He was only the second to offer me an interview. I bombed the first. Big style. I blame the change of climate. First time I’d been South of Watford Gap, other than to watch Chesterfield play.
I’d forgot I’d even applied, never mind what I’d actually applied to. So a bit like the night before Maths A-Level, it was some last minute revision (to find out what the hell recruitment was and why I’d be decent for it).
By 9am the next day, I’d got the script ready and recruitment was the career for me. Fortunately he bought it, or took a punt. Or maybe it was my ability to remember the script from every single Only Fools and Horses Episode.
Either way, things have worked out OK as 10 years after that interview James and I set up Distinct and we’re now recruiting our first Distinct trainees. So whether you’ve always dreamed about working in recruitment (I’ll believe you, honest) or reading this has just made you think about it, get in touch. Experience not important, but obviously if you’re an Only Fools fan you’re gonna be off to a good start.
THE ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
We’ve been going 3 years now, the guys that were with us on Day One are all still here and have been joined by a further 23 since 2016. So hopefully we’re doing something right.
You don’t need any recruitment experience. It doesn’t matter what your background is, you’ll just be hungry to develop and forge a successful career for yourself. One of the quotes on our wall is Work Hard, Play Hard and Be Kind – that pretty much sums us up. We take ourselves lightly but our jobs very seriously.
You’ll be surrounded by, and will get to learn from, the best recruiters around (loads of us started our recruitment career as trainees). Get in touch if you’d be interested. Call me if you want or check out any of our guys on LinkedIn and get in touch with them. They’ll be happy to tell you all about life at Distinct….
Pick up the phone or email me and we can go from there. Everyone will get a response.
